Internship Position: Box Office Associate
Description: Like most everything else at Mass MoCA, the role of the box office is anything but ordinary. What most might think is simply the gateway to the museum is so much more. On a daily basis staff duties may include ticket sales, data analysis, and preparation for big events to come. On the weekends our tasks center around the performing arts, which could mean operating the Will-Call, or trying to maneuver oversized crowds into small spaces. Several times a year, festivals are held during which the box office team coordinates virtually all of the day-to-day operations. Stationed in a tent in front of the museum, the box office staff not only keeps the normal operating functions alive, but also manages crowds in the tens of thousands which include guests, volunteers, and artists themselves. Working in the box office may be hard work, but it is never boring.
Review: As I approach my three year anniversary at Mass MoCA, I appreciate the changes I have seen. When I began my job I was an intern for the performing arts department which really helped me get my foot in the door. I was later hired in to the box office where I have now spent most of my time, and I don’t regret a minute of it. Sure, there are days that 3,000 people walk through the doors and we are all pushed to our limits, but we continue to persevere. Without the team we have right now, most of what we do would not be possible, and I am just grateful to be a part of that.
