“ There is an artistry in collecting moments and memories in life. I think of this series of acrylic paintings as individual snapshots of dreams, spontaneousness, youthfulness, imagination, and beauty. Each depiction I painted on a color sample sheet was inspired by the color and the name. Illustrating all life can offer through color, even the little things that create a long-lasting feeling of fulfillment.”
-Tiffany Ferreira on her most recent body of work, Life's Moments Through Color
I met with Tiffany after class on the third floor in Bowman. We quickly found a spot to discuss her project. She heaved her backpack onto a swivel chair and pulled out a ziplock sandwich bag, her makeshift portfolio. In front of us, she laid out paint swatch cards, (the kind you swipe from a paint store when you're a child) detailed with intricate, whimsical designs.
Ferriera is a sophomore at MCLA, double majoring in art and arts management and minoring in art history. Her creative journey started with dance and gymnastics lessons, but over time she lost interest. Her mother noticed her change in interest. "My mom asked if I wanted to try art classes and saying yes to her was probably the best decision I made. I continued to take art classes all the way through high school where I was able to learn and develop my skills. I think I have many different inspirations that have changed and grown over the years."
When I asked Ferreira what inspires her, looking through her work, the evidence is clear. "Life and nature's beauty is a big inspiration and where most of my subject matter comes from. Being able to create and capture moments and memories is another big inspiration. And I think art in general allows the artist the opportunity to express themselves in any way they want. No matter the outcome or what others think, the process and what the piece means to you is what counts and is most rewarding."
Ferriera, Life's Moments Through Color;
"I started the Life's Moments Through Color project over the summer as a random series that I could add to overtime and would keep me painting. I've seen people paint on mini canvases, paint samples, and various other small surfaces, and thought of a different way I could reinvent this idea and make it my own. So, I went to Home Depot got some color sample sheets, and started to paint. I wanted to create paintings based on the color and its name. When thinking of what to paint most times I do a lot of research for reference photos or ideas I can mend into the overall idea I have in mind. As I paint sometimes plans change, as you can see in the process video for the "Summertime Storm", and that is perfectly fine and destined to happen."
